The thrust of the project is to build the capacities of the indigenous population of the Javaé and Karajá ethnic groups from the Txuiri and Canuanã villages, near Formoso do Araguaia, Tocantins state, so they are able to manage their own process of development.

Our objective is the conservation of  Bananal Island, in Tocantins.

This is a proposal for a socio-environmental intervention, made feasible by the sustainable transformation of a community through the training of indigenous leaders to implement eco-tourism/ethnic-tourism, whose sustainability would be guaranteed by the synergy created between the community, public authorities and market opportunities.

The main component of this sustainability will be the leading role played by the indigenous peoples through the recovery of their traditional knowledge, through their culture and the strengthening of their self-esteem.

General Objective: Promoting the generation of decent work, jobs and incomes, thus contributing to the formation of a self-sustaining community through the strengthening of citizenship and socioeconomic inclusion, in the context of environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Social participation and beneficiaries: Population directly involved: 900 indigenous inhabitants of Bananal Island, state of Tocantins, from two villages, Txuiri (about 200) and Canuanã (700).

This project is geared to promoting Eco-tourism/Ethnic-tourism, environmental education and local development. It will be conducted through integrated and interconnected sub-projects:

  • Environmental and territorial management  – (Culture, Territory, Economic Alternatives, Food Sovereignty, Education, Health and Infrastructure);


  • Workshops on selective waste collection and conscious consumption;


  • Revitalization of craft work;


  • Environmental education workshops (Training of multipliers and Environmental agents);


  • Development of Eco-tourism and Ethnic-tourism with local sustainable development.
