The EcoPoint Project at School is an educational project that involves a selective selection as part of the recycling process through the Distribution of Ecopoints in the schools of Palmas-TO, Brazil.

The general idea is to foster the importance of selective collection amongst young people, children and the community of municipal schools, through the integration between the older adults and students of the public school system, creating an intergenerational exchange of knowledge.

From the observation of the underutilization of the strength of the older ones so present in Brazilian society, where the older adults are on the margins of society with entrenched stereotypes, this project uses the workforce of the graying as a training tool and sensitization of the environmental theme in the social base, which is our children, the future of our nation.

The Ecopoints will have a modern design and will be personalized from drawings developed by the students of the schools involved in the project. The drawings will be drawn from lectures held at the schools and practical activities of thematic drawings developed by the students, which will be selected by the project team and will be submitted to graphic treatment for the plotting of the Ecopoints.
Each school will define a group of students who will participate in the lecture and who will receive orientation on the theme and the purpose of the drawings, which will be strategic for the mobilization around the importance of the selective collection.

The Ecopoints will be installed in schools as a way of sensitizing the population, especially young people, teachers and the community, who will have the Ecoponto as a fixer of the message throughout the year regarding the importance of selective collection and the existence of the units of environmental conservation.

Another important point to mention is the modern appearance of the ecopoints, which contributes to the change of viewpoints in relation to the selective collection, leaving behind the prejudice and the erroneous beliefs on the collectors and the activity as a whole.

The Ecopoints will have voluntary delivery features, however, the actions of mobilization and sensitization with the workshops will strengthen the participation of the local community in the adoption of essential habits for the success of selective collection.

The exchange of knowledge will insert the older adults in the social context as well as encourage them to be actors of change in the local reality. By working in the school context they are empowered as agents of transformation of the daily life of the environment in which they live, leaving thus, the stereotyped invisibility of the older adults in Brazil.

Preparation and Implantation of the Ecopoints – USD 40.000

This is the initial and also crucial stage of the project. Together with the partners, the schools where the project will happen will be defined as well as the responsibilities of each party. Additionally, the processes of project dissemination and structuring will be initiated.

For the good progress of the project, it will be essential the partnership with the actors directly involved with the selective collection in the municipality. To do so, the municipal government of Palmas-TO, cooperatives and associations of collectors and local NGOs will be involved in the process.

The academics of the University of Maturity will enter as project monitors acting on the front line of education for sustainability in the public schools targeted by the project.

The participation of the municipal management body will occur with the increase of the existing infrastructure of selective collection, which has appropriate trucks that already work in projects of selective collection in the municipality.

The State and Municipal Secretariat of Education are amongst the partners with a relevant role in the mobilization of young people, besides supporting the execution of workshops and the teaching methodology to be applied to the students.

After the negotiations with all the partners have been completed and the responsibilities of each one during the execution of the project have been agreed, the starting dates of the Project are defined, which includes the signing of the Partnership Agreement as well as a presentation of the project for the students that will culminate in the contest of drawings that were chosen to be plotted in the Ecopoints.

The Ecopoints will have a modern design and will be personalized from drawings developed by the students of the schools involved in the project. The drawings will be drawn from lectures held at the schools and practical activities of thematic designs developed by the students, which will be selected by the project team and will be submitted to graphic treatment for the plotting of the Ecopoints.

Each school will define a group of students who will participate in the lecture and who will receive orientation on the theme and the purpose of the drawings, which will be strategic for the mobilization around the importance of the selective collection.

The modern appearance of the Ecopoints, will contribute to the change of looks regarding the selective collection, leaving behind the prejudice and the erroneous view on the collectors and the referred activity as a whole.

The Ecopoints will be installed in twenty-five schools of the city, covering from north to south, all regions of the municipality. The choice of these schools will be defined in partnership with the City Hall aligned with the Municipal Secretariat of Environment and Education as well.

During the Project periodic collections will be made at strategic times to ensure the proper functioning of the Ecopoints, in addition, they will be monitored by the project team in case eventual adjustments of time and days of collection are needed.

The collection will be done by the Municipal Department of Environment and delivered to the collectors of the cooperatives and associations of the city of Palmas.

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE – Stage of awareness and communication of the project with society- USD 92.5oo

Stage of awareness and communication of the project with society, where the elders in interaction with the school community are able to exchange knowledge and also produce it at the same time.

During the publicizing and mobilization throughout the project, priority should be given to the vision of the future and to the question “where do we want to reach” with the defined target groups, with a view to making the project known and and “prepare the ground” for the participation of the various segments of society, observing the conditions of governance and sustainability.

The main focus of project awareness and communication will be:

  • The project as an instrument of change and transformation of local society;
  • The need and importance of the commitment and participation of society, in all its segments, to achieve the objectives and desired results; and
  • The essentiality of partnerships between public authorities, civil society and private initiative.

One way of sensitizing the academic community will be the lectures on solid waste and basic sanitation. In order for this to happen three lectures will be held in each school, where the public will be the students themselves, the parents, the teachers and the community in general.

Important for the programming of this action is the alignment with the activities of each school so that it does not compromise the school calendar. With this in mind, the lectures must be held during the scheduled events, such as celebrations, meeting of parents and teachers and internal events.

Art-recycling workshops and craft production as a way of raising awareness will be held in each school selected for the implementation of the Ecopoints.

The purpose of the workshop is to develop the sensitivity of children and elders to the various functions of materials that, prior to the action taken, were considered to be garbage. At the time, all those involved in the project will be present.

The materials used for the workshops will be recyclable materials, obtained by the students in their homes and the other necessary inputs will be provided by the partners. There will be two workshops per school, giving practical knowledge to 40 children, totaling at the end of the project 200 children directly benefited, besides those indirectly benefited by the replication of shared knowledge.

The workshops will use as a concept the application of The Three R’s Theory:

Reduce: Reducing the amount of waste we produce is essential. Consumers should adopt habits of purchasing products that are reusable, such as cloth napkins, cloth bags to make their daily purchases, reusable packaging to store food rather than disposable.

Reuse: use several times the same packaging, with a little imagination and creativity we can take advantage of leftover materials for other functionalities, for example: plastic/glass bottles for storage of liquids and various containers to organize office supplies.

Recycling: transforming previously useless waste into raw materials or new products is a benefit for both the environmental and the energetic aspects.

This goal will also contemplate the implementation of the green currency as an integral part of the Ecopoint project, which will include lectures on enlightenment and awareness of the social currency functioning, as well as the importance of this process for the school community and the environment.

As a means of encouraging students or also a healthy way to conduct a competition, IDAHRA created the green currency, a merely illustrative bill with no commercial value, but would contribute to the control of waste donation.

The social currency is an instrument that will be used for the exchange of solid waste (paper / cardboard, plastic and metal), for school materials (notebook, ruler, crayons, among others).

The implementation of the Ecopoints will be carried out and monitored every 15 days in each of the schools by the students of UMA, with the collection and exchange that will be conducted by the school coordinators who participate in the project and IDAHRA, through control tabs of collection and delivery.

Partnerships will be established with local Universities in order to capture monitors to meet project demands, helping older people coordinate activities in each school, especially in weekly awareness visits, operating as an intergenerational bridge. The partnership will be signed in meetings at the University of Maturity, with the presence of the older adults. It is worth mentioning that volunteering helps in the construction of a human being more sensitive and able to work with other people, and the Institute values this quality.

The assignments will be informed to the volunteers during the meetings, defining who is supposed to stay in each school and the days that they are supposed to make the visit as well as the workshops. Academics are enthusiastic about taking part in the actions, all of which will be rewarded with additional hour’s certificates, which will count as a bonus to their resume

Evaluation and Monitoring – USD 67.500

It is in this action that the network of partners is created and maintained, and the responsibilities of each one are defined and verified, as well as the results obtained during the development of the project are presented.

For the good progress of the project it will be essential the partnership with the actors directly involved with the selective collection in the municipality.

Each school participating in the project will hold an annual ecological fair, with the participation of the students, by class or individually, encouraging them to make a presentation about what they learned from the Project and its theme throughout the year.

The fair will involve participation in several “segments”: theatrical, musical and gastronomic plays, among others, contextualizing the themes worked by the project throughout the year, materializing the results obtained by the actions of the projects. These fairs will be coordinated by schools and the monitors of UMA / UFT who will be able to witness the results of their efforts throughout the year reflected in children’s creativity, focusing on citizen intergenerationality, where the eldest plays an active role in society.

At the end of the presentations there will be an award, by category, of the most creative and engaging works. The board of jurors will be composed of people external to schools.
